We practice traditional JKF Wadokai karate along the same lines taught at Arakawa Toru's dojo in Tokyo.

Our core training is:

Kihon - basic body movement and footwork, parrying, punching and kicking technique

Kata - the 9 fundamental kata of Wadoryu karatedo. View the kata here.

Kihon Kumite - 10 standing pair techniques, fundamentally, the essence of Wadoryu karatedo

Jiyu kumite - free sparring

In addition, we train combination techniques, various further kumite (pair techniques) and supplementary training exercises, padwork, bagwork, focus pads etc.

By training a narrow range of techniques such as this we can practice the basic principles of body movement which is the essence of Wadokai Karatedo.

When time allows, we can also train the following techniques which build upon the basic skills and utilise the principles learned from the core training:

Kumite Kata - further series of pair techniques developed by Hironori Otsuka which teach close range 'infighting' techniques.

Idori - 7 kneeling techniques with a partner. These are influenced by Otsuka's training in Shindoyoshinryu and Yoshinkoryu styles of jujutsu.

Tantodori - 7 basic techniques of disarming a knife wielding opponent. These are also influenced by Otsuka's training in Shindoyoshinryu and Yoshinkoryu styles of jujutsu.
